Start with the Chocolate, Not the Ribbon
The first question: what kind of chocolate are you packaging, and what experience do you want the customer to have?
Artisan truffles in a single-layer box. A 15mm or 20mm double-face satin ribbon in a muted color (ivory, champagne, pale gold) tied in a simple bow.
Assorted chocolate collections in a multi-layer box. A 25mm or 38mm satin or grosgrain ribbon. Deep burgundy, forest green, or navy for a classic look; copper or rose gold for contemporary.
Seasonal gift sets. A 25mm printed ribbon with a seasonal motif adds festive touch without requiring a custom-printed box.
Corporate gifting. A 20mm or 25mm satin ribbon in the company brand color, with a simple logo print.
Material Matters: Satin vs. Grosgrain vs. Organza
Satin. The gold standard for chocolate packaging. Double-face satin has a smooth, lustrous surface on both sides. It drapes beautifully and holds a bow well. Premium satin is woven with high-tenacity yarn for more body and richer sheen.
Grosgrain. Distinctive horizontal ribbed texture, less shiny than satin. Great for brands wanting to convey heritage and craftsmanship. Slightly more durable for long-distance shipping. The downside: does not hold a bow as well as satin.
Organza. Sheer and translucent, adds visual depth. Works beautifully for wedding and Valentine collections. Pair with a sturdier ribbon underneath as edges fray easily.
Width: How to Choose the Right Size
- 10mm - Best for small boxes under 10cm or as a decorative accent.
- 15mm - Sweet spot for single-layer truffle boxes and slim chocolate bars.
- 20mm - Most versatile. Works on medium boxes (15-20cm), supports small logo print.
- 25mm - Standard for premium chocolate gift boxes. Our most-recommended width.
- 38mm - For large presentation boxes. Creates a bold, confident bow.
- 50mm+ - For oversized boxes. Use sparingly.
Rule of thumb: ribbon width should be about 10-15% of the box width.
Color: More Than Just Matching
Do not match the box exactly. You want contrast. A dark chocolate brown box with gold ribbon. A cream box with burgundy. A black box with copper.
Consider the chocolate inside. Dark, rich chocolates pair with deep burgundy or navy. Light, fruity chocolates suit blush pink or mint green.
Test under store lighting. Colors look different under fluorescent, warm LED, and natural daylight. Always request samples before production.
Custom color matching is worth the extra time. The difference between close enough and exact makes a professional-looking product.
Printing: When and How to Add Your Logo
Hot stamping vs. screen printing. Hot stamping uses heat and pressure for metallic foil - most popular for chocolate packaging. Screen printing uses ink for non-metallic colors.
Print size matters. On a 25mm ribbon, logo should be no larger than 20mm wide. Recommended repeat distance: 6cm. Minimum order: 1,000-3,000 meters for custom printing.
How Much Ribbon Do You Need?
For a bow: (Box width + Box height) x 2 + 30cm = Total per box. Always add 5-10% for waste.

- Custom color: 2-3 weeks
- Custom print: 3-4 weeks
- Custom color + print: 4-5 weeks
Add shipping: 3-5 days air freight, 4-6 weeks sea freight. For seasonal products, order at least 8 weeks ahead.
