How a Fine Jewelry Brand Rebuilt Its Gift Packaging Program From the Ground Up
Fine jewelry brands have a particular challenge with packaging. The product is small, extremely high-value, and the moment of presentation — the opening of the box — is a significant emotional event. About a year ago, we started working with a fine jewelry brand in Singapore — a family business nearly thirty years old, in the process of elevating its brand identity. Their creative director noticed the navy ribbon on their gift boxes did not match the navy in their updated brand color system.
The Problem Nobody Had Named
Multiple ribbon sources accumulated over time resulted in slightly different navy ribbons sharing the same shelf. All were "navy." None were exactly the same. When you are selling a piece of jewelry to someone proposing or celebrating an anniversary, the ribbon the recipient unties matters. We produced a matched sample for Pantone 289 C in double-faced satin. Their team requested a slight blue-red adjustment. We produced two additional samples; they selected one as their production standard. Every production run is now matched against that physical reference under three light conditions before dispatch.
Width Tiering
We recommended: 25mm for ring and earring boxes, 38mm for bracelet and pendant boxes, 63mm for gift sets, and 100mm wired ribbon for large ceremonial packaging. Wired ribbon holds its shape — a bow tied in the morning still looks full at closing time.
The Outcome
Twelve months in, their packaging room has one ribbon for each size tier, all in the same verified navy. Packaging is now one of the most frequently mentioned elements in customer reviews — "beautifully presented," "looked incredibly luxurious," "felt like a really special purchase." What luxury brands should require: a locked color specification tied to a Pantone reference; multi-light verification; width tiering matched to box sizes; wired ribbon for larger bows in retail settings; a reorder process where "same as last time" is a genuine guarantee.
